A wall painting, representing a mandala, at the Changangkha Temple in Thimphu Bhutan. Mandalas, concentric diagrams, have spiritual and ritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism. Religious Paintings and statues are in the public domain. Bhutanese art is anonymous, religious and as a result it has no aesthetic function by itself. A Bhutanese does not view a painting or a statue as a work of art but as a religious work. Paintings are not signed, paintings have no copyright. This is all well explained in Fran?oise Pommaret’s “Bhutan, Himalayan Mountain Kingdom” edited by Odyssey Books & guides.
