Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA - June 15, 2013: These Rio Grande rafters are helping to raise environmental awareness of the plight of the Rio Grande, designated as one of the world's most endangered rivers. The annual Raft the Rio event in Las Cruces, New Mexico is sponsored by Southwest Environmental Center and features creative forms of non-motorized floating boats, many made from recycled materials. The Rio Grande in southern New Mexico has been dry most months because of an ongoing drought. The water shown here is only temporary and was released in early June 2013 from an upstream reservoir for a greatly shortened irrigation season. After about a month, there will be no more water releases and the river bed will be dry again. Area irrigation officials have called the water shortages in the Rio Grande "dire."
