Description

'A wide angle view of the unspoilt and natural wilderness of the North Pennine moorland in Weardale, County Durham, looking towards the landmark of Rookhope Arch. Situated near Lintzgarth in Weardale, the arch is the only remaining feature of a set of buildings known as Rookhope Smelt Mill. The mill would have smelted lead ore from the lead mines along the valley into bars of lead. Originally one of six arches, they would have carried a horizontal stone flue from the smelting hearths over the river and road. The flue than ran as a tunnel underground for a mile and a half up the hillside to end in a chimney stack high on the moors. A dramatic and moody HDR merged image, intentionally desaturated.
