The entrance to The Royal Tobacco Factory in Seville, Real Fabrica de Tabacos, which is now part of the University of Seville. Completed in 1771 it is the second largest building in Spain. In the 19th Century three quarters of Europe's cigars were manufactured here, rolled on the thighs of over 3000 cigareras, female cigar makers. The factory formed the backdrop for Bizet and his 1875 opera, Carmen, whose character was based on one of these cigareras. A lot of care had to be taken by the tobacco business to protect it’s products from theft and the factory included a security system comprising a 300 metre moat, a drawbridge, sentry boxes and safe & secure locks on all the doorways, as is shown here...
