The Round Tower was built by Christian IV between 1637 and 1642. It was the first part of the Trinitatis Complex, which combined parish church, library and observatory in a single building.

The Observatory of Rundertårn was part of University of Copenhagen. The university is founded year 1479 by H.M. King Christian I of Denmark on permision from Pope Sixtus IV in 1474.

The Golden Inscription on the tower is an original rebus from 1642 by King Christian IV

Christian IV's draft of it, written in his own hand writing, is kept at the Danish National Archives. The full rebus includes the four Hebrew consonants of the Tetragrammaton.

DOCTRINAM ET DIRIGE HWHJ IN a red crowned heart symbol.

The rebus can be interpreted like this: Lead God, the right teaching and justice into the heart of the crowned King Christian IV, 1642.
