Description

An historic piece of land in Northeastern New Mexico is the site of many old wagon wheel ruts from the Santa Fe Trail's mountain branch near Fort Union. It is here that one can see several ruts that have eroded over the years, but it is easy to imagine covered wagons on the horizon, as they join travelers from the Cimarron Cutoff just south of here. The Santa Fe Trail was in continuous operation from 1821 to 1880, when railroads came to Santa Fe, New Mexico, eliminating the need for wagon travel.
