Sirmione is an ancient little town located at the end of a long, narrow peninsula jutting into the Lake Garda, the Italy's biggest lake. This is a richly historical resort, with the imposing Scaligeri Castle standing at the entrance to the medieval town where narrow streets are lined with cafAs, shops, villas and churches. The famous thermal waters of Sirmione are rich in sodium, bromine and iodine. The Roman poet Catullus, a contemporary of Julius Caesar, was born there. Today Sirmione still keeps many remains of its ancient history. First among these is the grandiose Roman villa known as ""Grotte di Catullo"", dating back to the beginning of the 1st century. Near the ""Grotte di Catullo"" there is the Lombard church of San Pietro in Mavino, containing medieval frescos. The ""Rocca Scaligera"" was built in Middle Age on the remains of an ancient Roman fortification.
