Lukla, Nepal - April 23, 2013: The short, steeply sloping runway of Tenzing Hillary Airport is considered one of the most dangerous in the world

Description

The short, sloping runway of Tenzing Hillary Airport is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. To the north, the runway has a steep mountain face while at the south end there is a steep drop into the valley. Planes can only land in good weather conditions - usually early in the morning. This photo was taken on an April afternoon as the clouds rolled down the mountains and over the blooming rhododendrons above the airport. Lukla Airport was renamed in 2008 in honour of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary and also to recognise their contributions to its initial construction. Today it is used by the trekkers and mountaineers heading to Everest Base Camp.
