Standing in winter snow, Abiathar Peak at 10,928 feet and the Absoroka mountains rise behind Soda Butte in the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park. Formed by a hot spring more than a hundred years ago, the travertine or calcium carbonate cone now produces small amounts of hydrothermal water and hydrogen sulfide gas.
