Description

This delightful mushroom was found in a pine glen in Connecticut. Mushrooms are temporary reproductive structures that push themselves from the ground when conditions are right for the purpose of distributing microscopic spores. The presence of a mushroom indicates a much larger, though unseen, network of fungal threads in the soil below. This mushroom probably took a couple of days to reach maturity, and was likely destroyed shortly after this photograph was taken (though not by the photographer).
