Short to tall, hairless, erect perennial; stems round with two raised lines, spreading and rooting at the base. Leaves opposite, linear to oval, unstalked, with large translucent dots. Flowers yellow, 18-22mm, in broad panicles, sepals narrow, with or without black glands, much shorter than the petals.
Habitat: Dry fields, woods and scrub, rough grassland, road-verges and hedge banks, on neutral or calcareous soils.
Flowering Season: May-September.
Distribution: Throughout Europe, except the far North.

St John's wort is widely known as a herbal medicine for treating depression.

This species is quite common in the Netherlands.
