Description
Stone pillar and remains of the Byzantine-era Church of Saint Simeon the Stylite, near Aleppo, Syria. The frame of this significant church is still remarkably well intact. The rounded stone is what is left of the pillar -- said to have reached a height of 60 feet -- upon which Saint Simeon, a well known hermit monk, lived for many years. In Arabic the site is known as Qala'at Samaan.
