Strasbourg, France - December 5, 2011: Notre-Dame de Strasbourg with a Christmas market stall, topped by the emblem of Alsace, ornamental storks, and with adverts for Noel Gourmand, a Gourmet Christmas. Strasbourg is known as the Christmas Capital because of its Christmas markets, held throughout December. Most of the current Gothic cathedral was designed and built in the 13th and 14th century. Architect Ulrich von Ensingen started the octagonal spire in the image, which for 400 years was considered to be the tallest building in Europe. Before the current cathedral was built there were earlier churches going back as far as Roman times.
