Nottingham, United Kingdom - January 11, 2013: The gatehouse of Nottingham castle. The castle is a major Nottingham landmark and tourist attraction. The castle is built on a high piece of ground called castle rock. It dates back to 1067 when the first structure was built on the site by Norman the Conqueror. Since then the castle was re-built of stone and used by various kings throughout the ages. It was destroyed after the execution of Charles I, but restored by Charles II in 1660. The central Ducal Mansion that was built in the 1670's was burned down in a riot in 1832. This was later restored in 1875 and remains to this day a museum.
