Neeleswhar,Kerala,India - January 22, 2013: Close-up of a Theyyam performer with ceremonial make-up and traditional costume and headdress.Theyyam is a famous Hindu ritual in northern Kerala.
The term Theyyam is a corrupt form of Devam ( God) and is performed especially in the districts Kasaragod and Kannur in Kerala. People of these parts of Kerala consider Theyyam as a God and they seek their blessings from the Theyyam. This ritual is performed in kavu , a traditional sacred place near traditional homes in the village. The dance is accompanied by powerful rythmic drumming and the perfomers wear a costume with a spectacular headdress and they belong to the lower class community. This picture was taken in Neeleswhar , a location in the Kasaragod district of northern Kerala, India.
