Togo in west Africa has many worshippers of Oudua, the animist deity that inspired (via the slave trade) what we know as Voodoo in the New World. This tradition is very much alive, and many villages feature a local voodoo healer, who focuses more on what westerners would call "mental health" or "emotional well-being" more than physical health.

The altar or small shrine shown in this image is used to focus the healer's attention on a particular situation, aided by offerings of alcohol, food, or other objects that may be burned as part of a healing ceremony.
