This computer generated image is called DTI (diffusion tensor imaging) color map of the brain. In neuroscience, the tractography is a 3D modeling technique used to visually represent neural tract using data collected by DTI, which is a special MRI method.
The tractography uses computer based image analysis, and the result can be represented in two and three-dimensional images.
The DTI has been used to evaluate the white matter connectivity of the brain.
The color code in DTI is: red represents fibers running left-right or right-left; green represents fibers running anterior-posterior or posterior-anterior; blue represents fibers running top-down or bottom-up.
This 3D DTI image shows the MRI of a patient who underwent a brain surgery called hemispherotomy: the sick cerebral hemisphere (in this case the left hemisphere) was totally disconnected from the right cerebral hemisphere (interruption of the red fibers); the ascending and descending fibers (in blue) were completely interrupted, and the green fibers were preserved.
