Cartagena, Spain - March 26, 2013: A "Trono" (a float depicting a scene from the Easter story of Christ) being carried during the Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions in Spain. The men carrying the tronos are known as "costaleros" (literally, "sack men", named for the sack-like cloth worn on their shoulders to soften their burden). A trono can weigh several tonnes, and may require up to 250 men to carry it.

Description

A "Trono" (a float depicting a scene from the Easter story of Christ) is carried through the streets of Cartagena, Spain, during the traditional processions of Semana Santa (Holy Week).

The men carrying the tronos are known as "costaleros" (literally, "sack men", named for the sack-like cloth worn on their shoulders to soften their burden). A trono can weigh several tonnes, and may require up to 250 men to carry it; this one has approximately 120.
