Panama Canal, Panama -- March 11, 2011: A tug boat helps a cruise ship navigate the entrance to one of the locks in the Panama Canal.

Description

The Panama Canal cuts across the narrow section of Panama, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, saving them the hazardous journey around South America. The lock empties into lakes formed when that section of Panama was flooded to form the Canal. The canal acts as a key conduit for international maritime trade.
