Ankara, Turkey - September 26, 2011. Turkish man works to restore an \'antique\' carpet in his shop. Although the history of handmade carpets is deeply interwoven with the history of the Turks, as both originated in Central Asia before spreading toward Anatolia, the cottage carpet industry has been losing blood in Turkey for a long time. Over the last 10 years, scores of producer firms have had to close their doors and shift to either importing stock from the Far East or even starting their own production units in countries with cheaper labor, leaving the sector with only a few domestic producers, who are largely not hopeful about the future.
