Description

Two young Ethiopian woman in traditional clothing are pouring the traditionally brewed coffee into the cups - this is part of a traditional coffee ceremony. This ritualised ceremony is an important part of the Ethiopian culture.

The ceremony starts with the roasting of the green coffee beans over hot coals. After the roasting the guests are getting a chance to sample the aromatic smell by waving the pot with the fresh roasted beans. Then the beans are grinded in a wooden mortar using a pestle. Afterwards the coffee powder is put in the boiling pot (called “jebena” in the Amharic language) which is typically made of black pottery.

Traditionally the coffee ceremony contains also the burning of incense, usually Frankincense (also called “olibanum”.

Location: Axum (also written as "Aksum"). This was the original capital of the kingdom of Axum (which was also identified as Abyssinia and Ethiopia). The town Axum is considered to be the holiest city in Ethiopia and is an important destination of pilgrimages. It is clamaid that the Biblical Ark of the Covenant is hidden in the "Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion".
