Funkstown, Maryland, USA -- July 15, 2011: Union American Civil War Reenactors recreating the action of a street battle against Union troops during the Civil War and holding a large American flag up high and proud. This war left its devastation on the town of Funkstown Maryland when, on Robert E. Lee’s retreat from Gettysburg, a battle by Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart against Union General John Buford was fought on the east edge of town. The main engagement of July 10, 1863, resulted in 479 Federal troops being killed or wounded. The battle of Funkstown is recreated each year by both Union and Confederate reenactors in period outfits using weapons of the time.
