Description

View into the lava lake inside the crater of Nyiragongo volcano – this is the largest lava lake on earth.

Mount Nyiragongo (3.470 m) is a strato-volcano in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Great Rift Valley. It is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 20 km north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda. Nairagongo is one of the most active volcanoes on earth – it´s latest large eruption was on January 17,2002. In this eruption about 45 people died and approx. 150.000 people of the town of Goma became homeless.

Nyiragongo is also considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of its particularly fast-moving lava, which can flow more than 60 miles per hour. During the 2002 eruption, swaths of lava up to 165 feet wide tore down Nyiragongo’s slopes, burning everything in their path.
