This wonderful colourful Oban woodblock print is by Yamazaki Toshinobu, (1857-1885) Son of a barber; He created thirty woodblock prints of the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion. He moved to Osaka where he worked as an illustrator of novels created illustrations for newspapers and continued to create woodblock prints.

This print (dated 1877) published by Hayashi Kichizo and series named Asano Shimbun, is from a gossip newspaper. In the print a couple sitting and eating with typical chop sticks. On the wall is a clock with Roman numerals and a Tilly lamp to give light, which shows that this print was made after the Americans opened up Japan. A small dog sits in it’s red spotted coat, while another woman peers around the screen. Has she discovered a liaison?

This print forms part of my own ephemera collection.
