Description

Rich volcanic soils of highland northwest Rwanda around Mudende and Mugongo on the slops of the Virunga Mountains which includes some still active volcanoes. Note in the distance several extinct cinder cones topped with planted eucalyptus forest for firewood. The intermediate fields have been labored by hand with hoes--very backbreaking work--to plant potatoes which is now the principal food crop of this very densely settled area within northwest Rwanda. This part of Africa along the Great Western rift Valley overlooks Lake Kivu and other 'great lakes' of Central Africa. and is about 7-8000 feet in altitude above most mosquitoes which transmit malaria as well. Nearby is the entrance to Volcanoes National Park where the last remnants of the Mountain gorilla are to be found; it is very close to where the three countries of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet.
