View of the Wachau seen during a cruise on the Danube. The Wachau is a region in the Lower Austria along the Danube river well-known for its wine growing area. Its beautiful landscape includes vineyards, many of which are built on terraces overlooking the Danube, villages, abbeys, and small towns rich in history. Located midway between the towns of Melk and Krems, the Wachau is about 40 kilometers (25 mi) in length and is crossed by footpaths and cycle paths. It is inscribed in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites since December 2000.
