Spreading tree to 30m with smooth greyish bark, eventually fissured. Leaves pinnate, alternate, with 7-9 elliptical, untoothed, leaflets, aromatic when crushed. Male catkins pendent, yellowish-green, 5-15cm. Female flowers in short erect spikes. Flowering season: April-May. Fruit oval, fleshy, deep green, aromatic and staining, 4-5cm, containing the walnut.
Distribution: SE Europe. Long cultivated for its nuts and fine-grained timber; occasionally naturalized in hedgerows or along woodland margins in S Britain and France.
