Samye is the oldest monastery in Tibet built in the 8th century.Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche, one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism cleared the negative influences out of the area allowing the monastery to be built. It has a walled cosmological layout with four colored stupas. Each color represent an element and the White Stupa represents compassion.
