Low hairy perennial. Leaves oval, tapered to the stalk, finely toothed, bright green above, pale and hairy beneath. Flowers pale yellow, 20-40mm, solitary, usually with orange markings in the center, fragrant.
Habitat: Moist shaded places, woods, coppice's, thickets, scrubs, grassy banks, ditches, Hedge banks and sea cliffs, generally on heavy (calcareous) soils, to 1500m. The species is but much diminished in some areas due to modern agricultural practices and over-collecting.
Distribution: Throughout Europe, except Finland and Iceland.
Widely cultivated in gardens, including white and pink flowers.
Formerly an important medical plant - the roots are said to be a strong, but safe, emetic.
