Description

Tall biennial, to 2m; stem erect, prickly on the angles. Basal leaves in a large rosette, oblong-elliptical, untoothed, prickly, withering early in the second season; stem-leaves linear-lanceolate, the pairs fused together around the stem at their bases. Flowerspinkish-purple, in large spiny oblong-cylindrical heads, 3-8cm long.
Habitat: On many places, especially on clay soils.
Flowering Season: July-august.
Distribution: Britain, Belgium, Holland, France, Italy and Germany; naturalized in Denmark.
