Low to short, hairless, rhizomatous perennial. Leaves with deeply-lobed, toothed divisions, the basal generally appearing after the flowers. Flowers white, often flushed with pink outside, solitary, 20-40mm, half nodding to erect; petals 6-12.
Habitat: Woodland, woodland rides and clearing, copses, scrub, hedgerows, sometimes in more open habitats such as grassland, usually on calcareous or neutral soils, occasionally on acid soils. Flowering Season: March-May.
Distribution: Throughout Europe, except the Faeroes, Iceland and Spitsbergen.
Widely cultivated in Gardens.

Wood anemone is a typical Spring Flower. It appears before Leaves are on the Trees. It is to be found in deciduous Woodland and Clearings and sometimes Grassland (as Woodland Relict).
