The bright yellow flowers of a laburnum tree are most often seen in carefully-tended gardens. This one is growing semi-wild, in an area tended for public enjoyment for the last 100 years – Mitcham Common in Surrey, England.

Laburnum is the name given to this plant by the Romans when they came to Britain. Beautiful but poisonous, the tree famously provided wood for cabinet makers. It is also known as golden chain, because of the way in which the yellow leguminous flowers dangle.
