Durham Cathedral is renowned as a masterpiece of Romanesque (or Norman) architecture. It was begun in 1093 and largely completed within 40 years. Together with its neighbour Durham Castle, the cathedral is now a World Heritage Site. This view towards Framwellgate Bridge, one of the city's famous medieval crossings was taken late on a winters afternoon with the buildings bathed in the warm glow from a low winter sun. "Durham Cathedral is renowned as a masterpiece of Romanesque (or Norman) architecture. It was begun in 1093 and largely completed within 40 years. The Cathedral is built on a strategic peninsula of land created by a loop in the River Wear and its west end towers over a precipitous gorge. Together with its neighbour Durham Castle, the cathedral is now a World Heritage Site. The Old Fulling Mill next to a weir on the river, dates mostly from the 15th Century and played a key part of Durham's cloth-making industry. "Norwich, England - August 29, 2009: Norwich Castle keep and castle mound on a late summer day. The stone keep was constructed by order of the King between 1100 and 1120 to replace a wooden structure which stood on the same mound dating back to the Norman conquest of 1066. The castle was used as a prison until 1887 and has been used as a museum since 1894."

Cardiff Castle, Wales - June 20, 2022: Cardiff Castle (Welsh: Castell Caerdydd) is a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion located in the city centre of Cardiff, Wales. The original motte and bailey castle was built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort. The castle was commissioned either by William the Conqueror or by Robert Fitzhamon, and formed the heart of the medieval town of Cardiff and the Marcher Lord territory of Glamorgan.

"A view of St. Andrew's Church and its churchyard in Hartburn, Northumberland taken on a late summer evening with long shadows cast over the graveyard. The oldest parts of the church date to before the Norman Conquest in 1066 with the tower and chancel being rebuilt in the 12th Century. The chancel was extended along with the addition of the aisle in the 13th Century. Further restorations took place in 1843 and 1890. When the vestry was repaired in the 1960's, a line of skeletons dating between 966 and 1166 AD were found buried just beneath the floor.More of my images from around Britain in this lightbox:"

The history of this church goes back to William of Normandy who conquered England in 1066 and became king. He rewarded a Norman knight called Unspac who had fought with him by giving him the Eynsford land. Unspac's son Ralf built St Martin's Church on the site of an old Saxon church, using local Kentish flint. Ralf renamed himself William d'Eynsford in honour of William the Conqueror.
