A few people on the quayside of the Purfleet, an historic dock leading from the River Great Ouse in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, Eastern England, which is the site of the famous old Custom House. The Custom House is probably the best-known building in this ancient town and port on the west coast of Norfolk. It was built as a merchant exchange in 1683 on reclaimed land at Purfleet Quay in the Dutch style so often seen in Norfolk. The building was bought by the Crown in 1717 for the use of Customs officers and was in use in that capacity until 1989. The Union Flag is flying at half-mast in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II who had died a few days earlier.

High water marks beside the doorway to St Margaret’s Church, King’s Lynn Minster. They show the levels the flood waters reached on the church fabric in various years. The 1953 floods along the East Coast of England are particularly remembered because of the severe loss of life and damage to property; the flooding was caused by a combination of storm surge, high atmospheric pressure and extra high tides.

"Kings Lynn, England - September 17, 2012: Wide-angle view of the Duke's Head Hotel and Tuesday Market Place, King's Lynn, Norfolk. The Tuesday Market Place, one of the oldest in Europe, has been the site of a market for hundreds of years. The famous Lynn Mart - a lively fun fair - is held there for two weeks every year, starting on St Valentines Day, 14th February. The modern market is held twice a week and on other days the area is used as a car park. The Market Place was also used for punishment in the stocks, hangings and witch burnings! The Dukes Head Hotel dates from 1684. (Bright sun with strong shadows. Background people.)"

"Kingaas Lynn, England - September 17, 2012: Shoppers outside a branch of Sainsburys in the Vancouver Quarter, King's Lynn, Norfolk. The Vancouver Quarter - named after the naval explorer Captain George Vancouver, who came from the town of Kings Lynn - is a new pedestrianised shopping centre in the centre of the town. Sainsburys was founded by John and Mary Sainsbury in 1869 as a grocery store in London. It has since grown to become one of the UKs largest retailers, selling household items, electricals, clothes and much more. The adjacent shop is a branch of New Look, a women's clothing retailer."

A group of decaying old fishing boats resting on the mud at the far end of the short tidal creek named Fisher Fleet in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, Eastern England, on a sunny day. The Fisher Fleet is - as the name suggests - where the trawlers and other fishing boats moor to unload their catch, mainly shellfish and shrimps. Use of the Fisher Fleet was granted to the fishermen of the town by Queen Elizabeth I, giving them the right to “free and uninterrupted use of the Fisher Fleet for ever and ever”. Factories line the quaysides for processing the catch made by the boats.

"Kings Lynn, England - September 17, 2012: Carved stone signs on the front of a branch of Lloyds Bank in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England. The carvings are covered with netting intended to prevent pigeons and other birds from roosting there and causing a nuisance. Lloyds Bank dates back to 1765 and has seen many changes and acquisitions since then, including a merger with TSB (Trustee Savings Bank) in 1995 and the acquisition of HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland) in 2009. The company is now named Lloyds Banking Group."

Jesus Christ with some of the saints depicted on the reredos in the Minster church of St Margaret, King’s Lynn, in Norfolk, Eastern England. The saints seen here are St Jerome, St Gregory, St Augustine and St Ambrose and, creepily, all the figures appear to be looking straight at the viewer. The reredos was designed and installed by GF Bodley in 1899 during renovation by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church dates from 1101AD and was founded by Herbert de Losinga, Bishop of Norwich.

On the left is the exterior of the Hanse House in St Margaret’s Lane in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, Eastern England. The Hanse House was acquired by German merchants in the late 15th century and is one of the oldest buildings in King’s Lynn; it was once a Hanseatic warehouse where goods from the Baltic region were stored and traded. Once known as the ‘Steelyard’ from the German ‘Stalhof’, it is the only surviving Hanseatic building in England, although many alterations have been made over the centuries.
