The San Rafael Reef is a remote area of south central Utah that is not well known and not often visited. It is pierced only by Interstate 70, the last stretch of that national highway system to be completed, and a few lonely dirt roads. On the day this photographer was at the 75-mile-long precipitous east face of the reef, there was no evidence of other visitors. The tilted, colorful, ridgeline resembled the teeth of an enormous shark. Gaudy layers of sandstone were revealed along the base of the reef and in its crenelated folds.

These cliffs mark the edge of the San Rafael Swell, an enormous bubble of land that was pushed up from the relatively flat Colorado Plateau many millions of years ago in what is now the state of Utah.
