Wych elm is one of those trees whose flowers appear early in the year, when the branches are still bare. Later, in spring, the red-dotted seeds become prominent, being so numerous that they give the appearance of being leaves. The seeds will not be ripe until June. It is likely that this young wych elm was planted by the conservators of Mitcham Common in Surrey, where this photo was taken.

Large spreading tree to 40m, without suckers; bark with smooth silvery-grey, but eventually fissured and brownish; twig stout, rough when young. leaves rounded to elliptical with 12-18 pairs of lateral veins, rough hairy above, scarcely stalked. Fruit oval, 15-20mm, with a central seed (reddish). Habitat: Woods and hedgerows. Flowering Season: March-April. Distribution: Throughout Europe, except the Faeroes, Iceland and Spitsbergen. (N & C. Europe). Occasionally planted in Parks. This Picture is made in Spring in Flevoland (the Netherlands) in a Nature Reserve.
