London, England - April 25, 2011: A group of people looking at the wreaths beside The Cenotaph, in Whitehall, London. The Cenotaph was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens as a memorial to the dead in the First World War: it now represents every Commonwealth battle since 1918. It is the focus of national mourning and hosts the Remembrance Day service on the Sunday nearest to November 11th each year. 'Cenotaph' means 'empty tomb'. The memorial displays a simple carved wreath on each side of the words 'The Glorious Dead'. Flags for the British military services and the Union Jack stand around the plinth. It bears no religious wording or symbols. Further down Whitehall, a large crowd is looking through the gates of Downing Street, home of the British Prime Minister. The building immediately behind The Cenotaph is the Foreign Office.

The National War Memorial is a granite memorial arch with bronze sculptures in Ottawa, Ontario, and first dedicated in 1939. First built to commemorate the Canadians who died in the First World War, it has progessively been rededicated to include those killed in the Second World War, Korean War, the Second Boer War, the War in Afghanistan, as well as all Canadians killed in all conflicts past and future. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added in front of the memorial and symbolizes the sacrifices made by all Canadians who have died or may yet die for their country. On 22 October 2014, a gunman, armed with a rifle, shot at the sentries on duty at the tomb, fatally wounding one, Corporal Nathan Cirillo of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada.

The Australian War Memorial is Australia's national memorial to the members of its armed forces and supporting organisations who have died or participated in wars involving the Commonwealth of Australia, and some conflicts involving personnel from the Australian colonies prior to Federation.

This wall is part of the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. Each star represents 100 soldiers who were killed in the war. There is a total of 4048 stars on the Freedom Wall. This close-up offers a great view of the stars that are part of the monument.
