Columns rising from within an open courtyard in the middle of the ruins at Pompeii. The city of Pompeii located in southern Italy was a busy, wealthy Roman city that was destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and molten pumice by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. Believed to have been built in 600-700 BC by the Osci, it came under Roman rule in the 4th century BC and became a Roman colony in 80 BC. After the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, the site was lost for about 1,500 years until its initial rediscovery in 1599. The artifacts found have been well-preserved for centuries because of the lack of air and moisture and provide an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana.
