Description

A chance meeting of a Ladybug and Daddy Longlegs on a Hosta leaf. Hosta leaves are on a separate layer.

Zip folder includes AI8 .eps, 2550 x 3300 px .jpeg and press-quality .pdf files. Created from photos I took in my garden.

A note of interest: While researching both insects, I learned that Daddy Longlegs are not spiders at all, but are Opiliones. Also called "Harvestmen", they have eight legs, two eyes and one oval body segment. What looks like antennae in front of the two eyes are actually "jaws" used for grabbing and chewing. There are about 7,000 species of Harvestmen, and this guy from New Jersey had a scary red color on its body and legs, probably to make him seem poisonous to other predators, but they have no venom and are totally harmless to humans. Both Daddy Longlegs and Ladybugs are considered beneficial garden insects because they feed upon aphids, mites and other pests.
