"Karagöz and Hacivat" are the lead characters of the traditional Turkish shadow play which was very popular during the Ottoman Empire. Karagöz-Hacivat was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in Turkey, until tv and radio become widespread. It still survives but today, it is performed in a toned-down form intended for children audiences.

When the plays were first performed is unclear. It is believed that the first Karagoz-Hacivat play was performed for the public and in private houses between the 17th and 19th centuries.

The masters of Karagoz and Hacivat are called as “Hayali” Its meaning is 'imaginary' or 'image creator'. Every single character in the play is impersonated by a single “Hayali” mimicking sounds, talking in different dialects, chanting or singing songs of the character.
