The Twa (also called “Batwa”) pygmies are the oldest recorded inhabitants of the Great lakes region in Central/Eastern Africa (Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern part of Congo). The Twa have been for hundreds of years semi-nomadic “hunter-gatherer” people but due to clearing of forests for agriculture, mining and logging nowadays they belong to the poorest minorities in the region, most are landless in live in poverty. Today they numbered approx. 80.000 people.
