Modlarenuth Germany - August 30, 2009: Modlarenuth is the little Berlin in the German countryside. The barriers seen in this image were erected by the Soviet Union following WWII in an attempt to keep Germany’s people from leaving the communist controlled East to the West controlled by the US and its allies. The town of Modlarenuth was literally cut in two by the erection of this wall. This separation mimicked that of Berlin also divided by the wall.

Modlarenuth was known as little Berlin by Americans because the city was split in half between East and West Germany during the cold war. Part of the city is in Bavaria and partly in Thuringia. The northern part of the city was in East Germany and the southern part in West Germany. To remember this remnant of the cold war, a museum has been created that shows the history of the village and gives information about the political system at that time. Original fences, guard shacks and checkpoints are still in place to show just what an impact the wall had on the city.
