Description

Scene from the highly decorated Anandi Lal Poddar Haveli which is located in the town of Nawalgarh in Rajasthan’s Shekhawati Region, northern India. Derived from Persian, the word haveli means ‘an enclosed place’. Havelis, which amount to large mansions, are found extensively throughout the Shekhawati region and were built during the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly by rich merchants (Marwari) and Rajputs. The scenes painted on the buildings often depict contemporary themes, many connected with British imperial rule or the ancient Ramayana epic. This scene depicts Rama and Sita.
