Large, spreading Tree to 30m. Bark brownish-gray, often with spiraled fissures. Leaves oblong, pointed, toothed, scaly beneath. Flowers yellowish-green, in erector spreading catkins, female at the base, male above. Flower season: July. Fruit 1-3, smooth brown shiny nuts in a very spiny splitting husk.
Habitat: Woodland, particularly on acid soils but widely planted and naturalized. Indigenous in South Europe.
It is assumed that the Romans have probably imported the Species to the northern parts of Europe.
