The toot of a steam whistle is made with this device. The valve (lower part with the lever on it) controls the steam. The resonator (cylinder above the valve) controls the pitch. It produces a VERY loud sound that can be heard for miles. Depending on it's design it can produce the pure sound of a european train, or the throaty gushing whooooo -whooooo of the American western rail lines.
