The log cabin block is one of the oldest of the quilt block patterns. It is attributed to the pioneer era with the central square, traditionally red, representing the central hearth fire. The lighter half of the block was the half of the cabin with a window and sunlight and the darker half where the sleeping quarters were located. The rectangles that create the block are of course the logs.

This particular block is sewn in flannel with the seams reversed, then washed and tumbled to create the 'raggedy' look, a new fashion in modern quilting.
