Densely branched spiny shrub to 1.5m, spines often in threes. Leaves rather small, deeply lobed. Flowers pale pinkish-green, often edged with purple, in small clusters of 1-3; petals white, tiny, sepals reflexed. Berry greenish-yellow or purplish-red., 10-20mm, bristly.
Habitat: Woodland, scrub, hedgerows, stream sides and beneath old walls, on waste ground.
Flowering Season: March.
Distribution: Throughout W & C Europe, including Britain, but widely naturalized in Ireland, Iceland and much of N Europe.

This Picture is made in a Formal Garden in the Netherlands.
