Madonna dell 'Impannata (1513)

The name "Impannata" designates a window covered with a linen pane. Its authenticity frequently questioned, there are drawings for it by Raphael. Some art historians attribute the execution to Giulio Romano. The Madonna presents her son to St. Elizabeth while the younger woman behind St. Elizabeth, St. Mary Magdalene, points to St. John the Baptist, and he in turn points to Jesus. St. John is eight or nine years old. The anachronism has been explained as required by the fact that John is the patron saint of Florence. The painting was in the collection of the Grand Duke Cosimo and was later catalogued as one of the works at the Uffizi before it became the property of the Pitti.
