Description

This is an old tennis ball I found during a hike in the desert. It has been lying in the blazing sun for so long that the heat and ultraviolet light has dried the rubber completely out and it is now dry rotting away. It's rubber shell has become so brittle that it has apparently ruptured from its own internal pressure. The crack-like rupture reminded me of a rift in a planetary crust that I've seen depicted in science documentaries, hence the title.
