"The Daw in Borrowed Plumes." Moral: Fine feathers do not always make fine birds. A rich, vulgar jackdaw dressed herself in fallen feathers from peacocks and assumed herself to be superior to other birds. When she was discovered, the birds took all her feathers, leaving her naked. Illustration from "The Fables of Aesop and others: Translated into Human Nature" designed and drawn on the wood by Charles H. Bennett, engraved by Swain, published by W. Kent & Co., London, 1857. Bennett was a prolific Victorian illustrator.
